Hello everyone, i'm a Driver in the RAF at RAF Marham in Norfolk and have a huge passion for cars and racing. Thing is i'm very new to this and want to start from the bottem and work my way up, i marshelled a track day on the airfield a while back, so I have a few questions. What kind of novice rallies are there? Any near my area? What kinda car would you use for starting out? (I'm thinking of a Pug 205 1.9 GTI). ;D Any special requirements for the vehicle? Any courses that focus on rally driving and not just experiance days? Any useful tips? What kind of training will my co-driver need? Any help on any of the questions would be awesome and I thank you in advance for your help. John

If you are trying to start rallying I suggest getting into a local rally club to find out more information about local rallies. Also if you are interested in rallying a Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 then joining the 205 Challenge may be a good idea. For more information visit www.205challenge.co.uk. 205GTi would be the best person to ask about this as he is currently in his first season . Good luck.

Hey hey
If your wanting a 1.9GTi then the challenge may be a bit extreme for you is your new to the rallying scene, the 1.9 guys are VERY fast and they also do events throughout holland etc too. That would mean that you need your international licence which you cant get untill youve done atleast 5 national events.
If you wanna talk you can catch me on msn at koeney@hotmail.com
Uhm, the 1.6 or the 1.4 challenge are great, sooooo friendly anyone will do anything they can to help you.
How old are you and where are you from BTW ?
NOW FOR YOUR Q's
As soon as you can pass your bars test you can enter pretty much any rally that you want in the UK at Nat B level.
Car, the 1.9 is fast BUT you may enjoy rallying better in a 1.6, saying that last years 1400 champ moved back to the 14's because he thought they were so much better and more of a laugh
As far as courses go, you can go on rallying days and get special tuition if you want.
Useful tips are... always listen to info from people who have been there years, uhm... dont try and push it straight away or youll bin the car.
As far as co-driving goes your best to find a set of notes that you like and then just sit down and talk through them together till you both understand

Infact you can build a BMW 32.5 challenge car for about the same price asa 1600GTi may be worth a look into there awesome fun

regarding motor clubs etc i think the Raf has its own motorsport club - www.rafmsa.co.uk ?? rally driving courses - www.rallydriving.co.uk then go on - personal & group event, England, motoring, rally driving to be honest i cant think of any events in Norfolk but i'd imagine their will be a fair few single venue events using the old airfields -www.ianhardy.net/calender might be helpful

Thanks for all your help so far guys, i'll be 21 in December, i've owned loads of cars over 2.0 litre and used to have a 1.6 GTI 205, the 1.9 has (i think) 10 more BHP than the 1.6, but i'll consider getting the 1.6.
I'll look around for 205 Clubs, as i'd be prepared to travel to rally.
Currently looking for a 205 to convert.
What types of rally competitions are there and for what cars?
Thanks alot John

Thanks alot John F1000 - Using things like 1l micras etc - talk to rallynick about it he has one 1400 205 challenge, 5 round championship with great rounds inc swansea, otterburn and plains 1600 challenge, 7 roungs inc mid wales, swansea, 1900 challenge, big expensive events inc malcolm wilson, swansea, international rounds in holland Stars of future, awesome rounds but hella expensive next year there may be a 1400 205 modified class with 130-140bhp... same rounds asd the 1400's but with more BHP than a 1.6 and not as much cost there are loads of championships just because youve owned bigger engined cars doesnt mean that you need them. remember if you go out and get something like a 1.9 gti or something its gonna cost you soooooooooooo much more to keep going at a higher level and for your first year or so i wouldnt bother spoending the money as there is a massive chance that you will crash it
