For those of you who don't know what the 'Superally' concept is, it is a rule that means once a driver retires from a rally, they can then enter back into the event with a five minute penalty. This concept was introduced in WRC Australia 2004.
I think this concept is a bad move for the WRC, as certain events such the Monte Carlo, have a reputation for being a hard event to complete. Drivers would pride themselves on being able to complete the Monte Carlo rally. It used to be a huge achievement for some drivers to get to the finish line.
However, this years Monte Carlo rally was the 2nd WRC event to have this new 'superally' concept. It takes away the difficulty of the event. The drivers can now have a crash and enter back into the event a few stages later with a five minute penalty. I feel that this new concept has only be added to make it more fun for viewers watching it on TV. Its turning the WRC into more of a gameshow than a challenge.
However, this new concept does have good sides, as it gives drivers who have not had much experience on certain events, a second chance to drive the event. It must be very frustrating for some drivers who crash out on the first stage after preparing for the event for days of shakedown and testing.

its not that good if you re enter with a penalty that big its very unlikely that you will be able to claw back the time

i had not heard of this rule until i read this thread, but it doesn't sound like a very good idea to me.
not only will it drain rally of one of its classic qualities, but it will close the gap between reasonably good drivers and the true talents. you may say this is a good thing, but it may cause individual rallies to become boring and insignificant -- in football, there is a new hero every day, and if this happens to rally, it will become a monotonous sport more dedicated to satisfying its competitors than its audience.

I like the idea used last year. Re-entering the rally but not on the leaderboard, as it gave teams like skoda and mitsubishi another chance. This year's is pathetic, stupid and take away the concept of rallying

Not all that keen on the idea myself, I suspect it's more to please the sponsors than the competitors, I mean the sponsors aren't interested in the sport particularly, they're just not happy if the cars with their logos on don't get lots of TV coverage so they'd like the cars to get right to the end of the rally so that lots of TV cameras spot their names. Fits in with the FIA's current obsession with pleasing the sponsors and the TV people as well. Motorsport as a marketing excersise. Sickening!
