Quite fitting really that in the week Need for Speed advert's flood WRC.com we get a top 10 rally crashes compliation. You get 20 videos to watch, which you can individually vote for on a scale of 1 - 10. I believe the more artisitc merit there is, the more points you give. The votes will then be calculated thus giving us a top 10, and as if he was told to do so to get into the top 10, Jari-Matti's big Portugal off is the 20th entry. WRC.com has offered no prizes for guessing the driver with the most entries. I recall giving Petter's 2004 German destroyer a full 10/10. Latvala's got a 9, I thought the heavy and awkard angles of Petter's impacts were worthy of making it the most spectacular crash, Latvala's was more consistant in term of angle impacts! I also gave Markko Martin's 2004 Argentina shut 10/10. Vote until you get bored here! Results announced May 1st. P.S. Can anyone spot the mistake in the second paragraph on the page?

Markko Martin and Michael Park in Rally GB, that was a pretty big crash. If you're going to celebrate big crashes, why exclude the fatalities? I'm not sure what criteria we're meant to be grading the crashes on.
Tommi Makinen's in the Subaru must be right up there. Petter Solberg and Phil Mills in Germany were lucky to escape with their lives. Henning Solberg in Australia in 2007? That was big... sheered through several trees. Cody Crocker in NZ was epic and highly artistic. Gilles Panizzi in the wet in Germany is the scariest crash I've seen. Markko Martin in Argentina was pretty big. Francois Delecour's in Australia was a huge shunt. Makinen in Corsica broke his co-driver's neck. Bonus points for hall of meat? Chris Atkinson ripping the roof off his Subaru last year?
Jari-Matti's tumble-drier effort was pretty good too. It was a pretty low-speed roll, they were just waiting for the wrong impact at the wrong angle to kill them. Bonus points for distance off the road and almost irretrievable car.
The Skoda leaning against the telegraph pole overhanging a vertical drop?
Some of the so-called top 20 are fairly lame in comparison.

I haven't seen the 2005 Rally GB footage for a while, but even if nothing untoward happened that time, it wasn't that "spectacular" of a crash. It was more of a spin with a violent impact on one side. Apart from that, I'm having a hell of a time grading them. I'm sure it was just as tough to come up with a shortlist of 20 given the amount of insane crashes since rallying's been around. Forget top 20, where's the top 1000 list!? Had Rally Portugal not run the other weekend, I'd have put Petter Solberg's 2004 Rally Germany crash on top, but Jari Crashi's impression of a washing machine is the most astonishing bit of footage I've seen for some time. The Henning Solberg Sweden 2006, Dani Sordo Finland 2006, Dani Sordo Cyprus 2006 crashes are the one's I don't rate highly out of that list. I'd replace the Dani Sordo Finland video and put in the original, Toni Gardemeister's crash in 2001 instead. Give credit where credit's due

My 8's
Sainz/Moya - Australia '91 McRae/Ringer - Finland '92 Burns/Reid - NZ '02 McRae/Grist - GB '01 Burns/Reid - Finland '00 Prokop/Tomanek - Portugal '07 Gronholm/Rautianen - GB '02 Makinen/Lindstrom - Argentina '02
My 7's
McRae/Grist - Australia '99 Wilks/Pugh - Spain '05 Mikkelsen/Floene - GB '07 (i was there:D)
My 6's

5's 4's
Niegel/Kachel - Italy '08
3's 2's
Sordo/Marti - Cyprus '06
1's
Others
I'd put other crashes into that shortlist and take out a couple. For example another big crash that should be put into that list would be Kresta's in Monte Carlo 2002 - slid into wall and was kept from falling down a cliff by a telegraph pole. Another one could be Rovanperas in New Zealand 2003, and Petter Solberg - launching his Ford through the Finnish trees in 2000 ;D

Right, Top 10 Most Spectacular Crashes. Haven't voted yet, but there are plenty of spectacular ones for sure.
Citroen Number Two Syndrome 2005 and 2006 - Francois Duval and Dani Sordo's consistent and spectacular crashes provided plenty of entertainment, while a certain team mate dominated. Duval - Monte, Sardinia Turkey 05 Sordo - Cyprus x2, Finland 06
Latvala Portugal 09 - PlayStation effort, catapult over the armco and rolling through the scenery. Lucky the tree was there to stop the Focus completely disintegrating.
Makinen Argentina 02 - Huge barrel roll, over what is perhaps the luckiest spectator in WRC history.
Mikkelson Wales 07 - Like rock paper scissors, but without the scissors. Paper said don't cut, Rock won. Roll Mikkelson, roll.
P.Solberg Germany 04 - Not rock, but hinkelsteins, and a number of them combined to cause absolute carnage...
Martin Argentina 04 - Not that Markko needed any to demolish his Focus after an epic nose dive.
Delecour Australia 02 - After taking a liking to our eucalyptus trees in 2001, Francois took aim at some more the following year with disastrous consequences. Epic crash, 90 G's recorded, engine was catapulted 50m away
Kresta Monte 02 - Stone wall was no match for the big Octavia. The telegraph pole saved the Skoda from a big, big, big drop.
Makinen Corsica 01 - Parked his Lancer turtle style right on the edge after colliding with the cliff face. Remember that Tommi did go all the way in previous years. 1997 a collision with a cow sent his Evo IV into a free-fall.

Cody Crocker in NZ was epic and highly artistic. Was that when his arm was flailing out the side window? That was a huge roll. Give credit where credit's due Agree with all of the above Rob. Toni's crash in the Lancer in Finland 01 was a much bigger shunt than Dani's.

Just watched Rally Sweden 03 again, it's brought back a whole bunch of accidents I've forgotten about. Rovanpera crashing into Pykalisto's parked 206 in the middle of the stage was an odd one. Markko Martin had a good one in the Impreza back on the San Remo Rally in 2001. He crashed the car twice that weekend - the crash I'm referring to is the one where it's pouring with rain, Martin gets caught out by the slippy leaves, the car flips and rolls down on its roof several hundred metres. Then there's Martin's 2003 Corsica crash where he outbrakes himself and 'gently' lands into the scenery - slightly injuring Martin's neck as he ended up driving with a neck cushion (just before the advent of the HANS device in rallying). That was also the very spot where Colin McRae had his 2002 shunt breaking his pinky, just in the opposite direction to Martin's crash. Another random McRae shunt...this time in Finland 2003 when he misjudges a pacenotes and goes hurtling through the trees - rather similar to Burns' 2000 effort, but Burns' footage is more incredible with the camera capturing every single moment and the violent sound of car meeting trees. I suspect this thread is going to get hijacked into the " post random accidents you remember in this thread that's better than dani sordo's cyprus 06 crash"

I suspect this thread is going to get hijacked into the " post random accidents you remember in this thread that's better than dani sordo's cyprus 06 crash" I'll take that as a challenge then! ;D Burns New Zealand 02 - Big roll, with Richard then stating the obvious when the cars comes to rest... "Oh No!" McCrash Cyprus 02 - Wasn't happy with his first off, so he crashed again. Still not happy with the damage, he took to the car with his feet in attempt to mold it into the shape he wanted. McCrash Junior Cyprus 02 - Notto be outdone, Alister driving the Mitsubishi decided to try the upside down line ... not surprisingly it didn't work. Atkinson Finland 05 - Numerous efforts to crash test his car thanks to the Super Rally system. Galli Finland 05 - Flung sideways after an awkward landing, Gigi ended up in the trees, despite his best efforts at controlling the car... "No! No! No! No! No! No!..." I think only the first two I posted would make the cut for the Top 10 though.

Petter Solberg Monte Carlo 2005 could have ended in complete disaster, he loses his brakes at the worst possible moment, in 6th gear bend that tightens to a hairpin left. Whacks the concrete wall, barely missing the spectators that lined the top of the wall as well as the metal barrier to stop the car having a Jari Matti Latvala moment.
There's also that infamous footage, at least when I first started watching the WRC, of David Loix's Group N Mitsubishi having another Jari Matti moment in...you won't believe this...PORTUGAL!
Nowadays David races in the compartively safer FIA GT3 championship in a Porsche - and before you ask, he's not related to Freddy Loix.

All are pretty bad.
Wasn't it last year when it was stated that Chris A. has the all time precentage of accidents.
Colin, was actully 9 or 10th.

He's had some big offs too. The one in Wales last year sounded pretty scary too. Aquaplaning off the road in the dark.

I was at Walter's Arena and saw Chris off, I say saw - I just saw lights then tail lights etc the blackness. Obviously being a fair distance down in the valley it took a while for the sound to reach us, but then you heard bang bang bang!
All the crowd saw it, the commentator was bleating "oh where has Atkinson gone?" pay attention lad. Have you see the footage of the crash Viv?

Yeah, I saw the on-board. Hammering in 6th gear and the road becomes not road.
