Any idea what this guy's doing in 2009? Who Matthew? I can't recall seeing Matthew Wilson going over jumps sideways, so I'm fairly confident that's Gigi Galli. ;D ;D ;D

Yep, the crazy Italian! I hope he gets another drive. He has some pretty good events leading up to his accident.

The cost cutting continues, Pirelly are bringing three extra 40 feet trucks full of snow tyres to Rally Ireland...
With just over four weeks to go until Ireland’s biggest sporting event in 2009, Rally Ireland have announced that Pirelli will be bringing their Monte Carlo Snow tyre option to the event for all competitors as an option instead of tarmac tyres.
To deal with expected weather conditions during the event, which takes place from the 29th of January to the 1st of February, Pirelli are bringing three additional 40 foot trucks with the Snow tyre option.
Gordon Noble, Clerk of the Course, said, “Many competitors at Wales Rally GB struggled from grip on the icy roads so it is great that we have this option in place for all entrants in Rally Ireland ’09. The conditions, as in 2007, will be testing for all the drivers but at all times safety must be to the fore and with these provisions in place we will get to see the best of what the world’s top drivers have to offer.”

Very good, having the snow tyre option. But it's one rally too late.
They should have known that Wales was going to be treacherous, being run so late in the year and all. Probably could have prevented some of those crashes.

The tipping championship for 2009 will have something new added to it. Read all about it in the Rally Ireland discussion thread. Urmo Aava will drive 8 rallies with Stobart Ford in 2009: Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Italy, Poland, France, Spain and GB. Mads Ostberg will drive 5 rallies in his Subaru Impreza WRC 08: Norway, Italy, Finland, Spain and GB. It is also rumoured that the entry closing date for rally Ireland has again been postponed, to January 13th. Petter Solberg is still trying to get something together to compete...

Is there any news regarding Andreas Mikkelson regarding his programme for 2009? Or is he destined for a season of national service instead?

It was confirmed that he won't compete in the WRC in 2009. His father obliged him to find sponsors himself. He couldn't find them and decided to do his national service. He will however try to get his hands on a S2000 as soon as possible to get used to the future WRC cars.

Mikkelsen will compete in the Subaru Cup in Norway at the wheel of a Group N Subaru Impreza N14. A group of Norweigen companies bought him the car. He's still aiming to do Rally Norway in a World Rally Car.

Patrick Sandell will compete the PWRC this year with the Red Bull Rallye team. He will be driving a factory supported Skoda Fabia S2000.

Rumours on Belgian forums state that Petter Solberg currently is in England to finalise plans to drive a Ford Focus WRC in Norway. Nothing said about Stobart or Munchi's though..

I bet Petter isn't getting a mates rate off Malcolm if that story does become true!
Interesting about Sandell getting the Red Bull drive on WRC.com is says "The news comes three weeks after Andreas Aigner and the Red Bull Rallye team put their partnership on hold. On 19 December the team said that despite winning the 2008 title, economic conditions had reduced the prospect of a factory drive for Aigner, and another season in the P-WRC was unlikely to help his cause." So it would seem Aigner is out in the cold!
Also on the Rally Ireland entry list, I think the shock has to be the lack of entries! I know times are tough but it's a bit of a shock to see such a low entry after the event having to turn drivers away in 2007. Also the entry list states 43 but I believe three of those arn't competing according to MN, with one driver on the entry list saying he never even intended to enter!
