Okay, Rally Japan is underway!
Stage 1 started very well for the Ford team, with Hirvonen scoring the first stage win, followed by team mate Latvala and Duval. Sordo was fourth and Matthew Wilson a creditable fifth, in front of Sebastien Loeb. On the next stage however, Loeb jumped up into fourth ahead of Sordo and Loeb. Villagra appeared to have suffered a puncture, while Rautenbach appears to have gone off the road early.
On Stage 5, Wilson dropped down to seventh, behind Petter Solberg. The Japanese teams of Subaru and Suzuki have had a subdued start to the rally, with Atko behind Wilson in eighth, and the Zooks of PG and Gardemeister in ninth and tenth respectively.
On Stage 6 however, the tricky conditions claimed the first victim of the rally. Conditions in Japan have been cold, with thawing ice and snow on the stages making muddy conditions similar to those that were experienced in Sweden earlier this year. The unlucky driver was Francois Duval, who slid wide on a corner and collided with a barrier, impacting the co-drivers door. The stage was cancelled and Patrik Pivato has been taken to hospital, but no details on his condition have been announced apart from that he was conscious.
Before the accident, Sordo was forced to stop in the stage with turbo problems, and will restart tomorrow under the SupeRally system.
Stage 7 is currently underway, but the times are not accurate for those further down the order due to the stage cancellation. Driver positions are listed as follows, but may chnage subject to time changes:
1. Mikko Hirvonen 2. Jari-Matti LATVALA 3. Sebastien LOEB 4. Petter SOLBERG 5. Chris ATKINSON 6. Henning SOLBERG --- times to be confirmed --- PG Andersson Toni Gardemeister Matthew Wilson Fedrico Villagra

It's all good, just timing issues. Atko is in fourth place, just in front of Petter. It'd be good if he can get in front of Loeb, get that podium, and I'm sure Mikko wouldn't mind either!
Stages 3 and 7 were cancelled due to poor road conditions, ie snow. And Stage 6 was where Duval had his crash, so not many stages were run today. Good start for Mikko, but Loeb is right where he needs to be to clinch a record 5th straight championship. Good potential for a battle between the Subarus, and Wilson vs PG.
1. Mikko HIRVONEN -0.0 2. Jari-matti LATVALA +26.2 3. Sebastien LOEB +30.6 4. Chris ATKINSON +1:00.3 5. Petter SOLBERG +1:02.0 6. Matthew WILSON +1:11.2 7. Per-gunnar ANDERSSON +1:11.6 8. Toni GARDEMEISTER +1:36.8

Really nice run so far, I'm enjoying it. Nice to see Subies running as they are. 4th and 5th not bad so far, but they sure do need to push it a bit more and break into podium finish. Sucks to hear about Duval's accident, and I hope all is going well with co-driver (name escapes me at the moment). Will Ford hold onto 1 and 2? I'm not sure...

bad luck for Pivato. That was a very bad crash. It reminds me Galli's crash in Germany.

Reminds me of Simon Evans' crash in Tasmania a couple of years ago. I never like to see side-on door impacts. It's the only really vulnerable place on a rally car nowdays.
BTW, thanks for the reporting! I've been away from the internet, so it's great to get a summary of what's going on.

Sordo drove very well today and made the best time in stage 11 If he had not lost the turbo yesterday, he would have done a great rally

If memory serves me right, this event is a test of the new safety seats and in the same article, there was mention that they were going to be improve safety for doors.
In other news, i've heard that Pivato is still in an induced coma becuase he has/had some internal bleeding. Dr's seem optimistic, lets all keep him, and his family, in our thoughts. Speedy, and whole, recovery!!!

Here's hoping that Patrick Pivato improves steadily and makes a full recovery. Well done to Sarah who picked the first four (in order) and has probably won this competition.

Can you still change you tips? Just in time, as long as they're in before the start of the shakedown of the rally. I'll calculate the results later today.
