With great sadness CAMS advises that Peter Brock, Australian motor racing legend, has today died in an accident during Targa West, a tarmac special stage rally being conducted near Perth, Western Australia.
The accident occurred at approximately 11:50am WST. The co-driver has been conveyed to hospital in a stable condition.
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) will conduct a full investigation into the incident. In the mean time, CAMS and event officials are working with the relevant civil authorities.
On behalf of the motor sport community, CAMS offers its sincere sympathy to Peter's family and many friends.
CAMS will issue additional statements as further information becomes available for release.
Colin Osborne, CAMS President, will be holding a media conference at the South Australian Office of CAMS at 3.30pm today.

I am shocked at this awful news. Peter did so much for Australian motorsport, words cannot express how much he will be missed. My thoughts are with his friends and family at this sad time.

NEWS: The factory teams of Subaru, Mitsubishi and Mini have pulled out in respectof Brock Witness: Peter Brock appeared to lose control of his vehicle on a tight hairpin bend before slamming into a tree, a witness to the fatal crash said this afternoon. A spectator at the Targa West rally in Western Australia, identified only as Jock, told Philip Clark's program on Macquarie Radio that he was standing just metres from the site of the accident. Peter Brock's car after the crash "The back end just slid out and that was it, it was all over," he said. "The car didn't roll, the back end just slid out from behind him and slammed straight into a tree and it got him right in the driver's door."

Very similar to Markko Martin and Michael Park's fatal accident in GB05. The car slid wide, sideways and directly into a tree next to the right occupant's shoulder. It's impossible to protect against and is one of the few unpluggable holes in rallying safety.
Peter Brock was a great ambassador for the sport in Australia. He was responsible for raising the profile of motorsport and was THE icon of motorsport in Australia. He put so much back into the sport as well, it was a life-long passion. To his credit, he continued doing what he loved into his sixties and that in itself is a great achievement.
RIP Peter Brock. 05 will forever bear your memory in motor racing in Australia.
Thanks Mitch for the photos and video.

Rest In Peace, "Peter Perfect," "Brocky." A true gentleman racer, a great supporter of road and race safety, and a history as colourful as the cars he drove. A great legend of Australian Motorsport.

A terrible shame, I had heard the name but knew little about him, but still very sad to lose another life in this sport.
R.I.P. Peter
And another thing, I take it he was a household name so it must have been a bad week, losing Steve Irwin as well.
