Unfortunately, I had a coming together with another car a few weeks ago. No damage to people, but car was written off. Now I need a new car. The benchmark is a 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX. I prefer hatches for convenience, so the VW Golf GTI is an option... or maybe even a GT SPORT with the twin-charged 1.4L I hear the new 1.4 is big in Europe. You guys know anything about them? What do you think? What should I spend my pocket-money on? And no, I'm not getting a Lotus Elise, 'cos it can't carry a pushbike... or anything.

Bugger Viv, glad to hear nobody got hurt though. Now, new cars. Most fuel efficient car in Australia at the moment is the Ford Fiesta Econetic. More economical than a Toyota Prius! And cheaper too! Not sure on the price, but I know of someone who recently bought a Ford Focus XR5, and he is very happy with it. The XR5 is the one with the 5 cylinder turbo. Fiesta XR4 is also a possibility. If the Subaru Impreza WRX is the benchmark, perhaps you should have a look at Mazda. If I'm not mistaken, the Mazda 3 MPS is more powerful, better equipped and better priced than the Suby. I've read mixed reviews on the Lancer Ralliart. Might pay to do some more research on that one. Honda Civic Type R? Very stylish hatch and quite quick. Eli Evans' car of choice for the 2010 ARC. If you want to carry a pushbike, Mini might struggle... but not as bad as a Lotus Elise.

I'd like something with similar handling characteristics and balance to my Civic VTI (ahem... ex-Civic). I've driven the 03-05 Impreza GX and it was actually quite similar feel but underpowered. The WRX would be pretty much perfect I think. I've driven the 06-08 WRX (2.5L) and it's unbelievable. I was so impressed, but realistically it's more power than I need. I generally drive to the limit... speed limit. The Mazda 3 MPS is probably worth a test drive. Lancer Ralliart... not too keen on the Mitsubishis. Civic Type-R... also tempting. Fiesta XR4 and XR5... have to be in there too. Damn, my list is expanding again!

Also, was going to test a Renault Clio 182 CUP or whatever it's called.

What about a BMW M3 Coupe? It is a nice comfortable car, fast, looks awesome. Also look at the Mitsubishi Evo X. I know you aren't fond of Mitsubishi, but this car is very nice. I test drove the sport edition and I loved it, but I am saving my $ for a 2005 WRX STi. And what about a Proton? You seem to know about them already. If all else fails, you could buy a Yugo or a Ferrari Enzo.

Well the search is over. The decision has been made, the car bought. Sitting outside is a Subaru Impreza WRX MY05 in metallic crystal grey. I'll post pics when I take a few. You know what it looks like.

Oh, and anyone looking for a new car... drive the VW Golf 118 TSI and the GTI... phenomenal cars!
I will definitely give the Polo GTI a drive when the next generation comes out! It's likely to be a VERY VERY good car.

Yeah no surprise to me there on choice with the Subie but yeah the Golf GTI´s are pretty nice cars. My brother has a bit tuned Golf GTI IV from 99 and it has a nice amount of power. Also from the internet you can find so many crazy tuned Golf´s what beats the supercars easily. Even as a basic car the VW´s are reliable cars and even fast and good to drive. I would recommend them to anyone too! I would say an Impreza was a good buy! Just dont pop up the Turbo,Viv . Cant still wait the pics.

Hehe, well, I could. But I prefer watching the road. Now to tyres... Looking at getting either: - Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 - Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 Both will be about $330/corner. But tyres are easily the most important part of a car. I don't mind paying a premium for the best.
