my review on FM2, has been posted on RS Forum before but not this one
This is quite possibly the most awesome racing game I have ever played. It's exclusive to Xbox360 and I have been racing online recently
There are almost 400 cars on lots of real life and fantasy tracks, including Silverstone, Mugello, Sebring, Suzuka, Tsukuba, Laguna Seca, Motegi and many more.
Here's my lowdown on this game, enjoy
CARS
Cars are split into different classes as follows, with examples of car(s) you'll find in that group
D - Ford Focus, Peugeot 207
C - Subaru Impreza, Evo X
B - Lotus Exige, Audi RS4
A - Ferrari 575M, Porsche 911
S - Pagani Zonda, McLaren F1
U - Koenigsegg CCR, TVR Speed 12
Race Cars
R4 - Light modifications (race transmission, rollcage) to road going versions of car
R3 - Moderate mods, wings, rollcage, power
R2 - Heavy mods, specially made wings, components, engines
R1 - Protoype Race Cars
Each road car can be upgraded with new turbos and other engine components, roll cages, new brakes, suspension, transmission, tyres, rims and wings. Every car will start out with a certain PI (performance index) number which will go up with each upgrade.
D = 0-400
C = 401-550
B = 551-700
A = 701-850
S = 851-998
U = 999
While racing you have the option of using driving aids, you can use Traction Control (TCS), Anti-Lock Braking (ABS) and the Stability Management (STM). You can also use Manual or Automatic transmission.
CAREER MODE AND OFFLINE RACING
Career Mode stretches a long way, lots of different categories that get unlocked as you earn credits for winning races. Your driver level goes up every so often by winning more credits, and as your driver level gets higher, new race areas are unlocked.
You start out in the Proving Grounds area , doing short (sub 3-5 minute) races on the different Test track layouts. In each race area there are different events where you will need a certain type of car (eg. 4WD, European, Mid-engined, No upgrades, Race tyres etc etc etc) to do the races in that round.
After getting your level high enough, you'll reach the Amateur Events which introduce you to the real life circuits, and then it's the Manufacturer Cup. Next is the Factory-Spec events which limit you to stock cars, with no upgrades. The next area is Rivalry Faceoffs, where two rival cars are pitted against each other, you have the choice of driving either one, for example there is one called the Rallycross Faceoff where Mitsubishi Lancer cars and Subaru Impreza cars are raced.
Next up it starts to get a little more serious with large amounts of cash prizes are now on offer for a lot longer races. This is the Professional Series, each round for a certain car class. In each event there are up to 6 races, you must do them in order, and points are given after each race depending on your position.
The final area is the Endurance Races. Each race will last just under an hour, maybe a little over an hour for the final couple. As ever each race requires a certain car or car class.
When you complete a certain area or round you are given a bonus cash sum towards buying cars for the following set of races. You are also given lovely Xbox achievement points =)
THE PAINT SHOP
The paint shop has probably increased the longetivity of this game by many many decades xD
With this awesome tool you are not only able to paint your car's bodywork, hood, rims, brake calipers, wings, and mirrors but you are also able to add vinyls and make your own designs. You can insert basic shapes, gradient shapes, letters, racing icons (flags etc), animals, tears, and many more
You can also use the wide bank of Manufacturer Decals - which is a preset bank of racing logos and such. Tyre manufacturers, oil companies, special sponsors logos are availiable to paste onto your motor.
On the Auction House you can see just what the Paint shop is capable of making as people have created more logos and fantasy designs.
ONLINE RACING AND MULTIPLAYER
Online is fantastic, Xbox Live required, you can get access to the Auction House, where you can buy and sell your career cars for in-game credits. With Live you are also able to race against other online Forza players, up to 8 in one session. The room host sets up the race settings, eg. laps, car class, track etc.
You can also gift cars to your Xbox Live friends.
Offline multiplayer gives you the option of having a system link game where Xbox 360 consoles can be networked together on a modem or router. Otherwise up to 4 players can race each other offline on one screen.
Online you are also able to check out the leaderboards. These can show you who has the highest TrueSkill rank (online Xbox ranking system, split into Beginner (0-15), Amateur (16-20) , Pro (20-25), Champion (26-30), Veteran (30-40) and Legend(40-50))
They will also show you the fastest lap around a certain track in a certain car group.
PHOTO MODE
In a career race you can pause and take photos, and you can also change the focus, aperture, colour, brightness, contrast etc to make them look better. While signed into Xbox Live, you can upload your pictures to forzamotorsport.net where you can save them to your computer and show them off on your desktop, post them on the internet etc.
Here's an example of a pic of my newly acquired BMW - I've changed the contrast and colour in the shot.
IN SHORT
Brilliant Points -
1 - Paint Shop
2 - Car choice
3 - Graphics and sounds
4 - Auction House
Not so good points
1 - No weather
2 - Not as many tracks as we'd hope for
Overall I give this game
9.7 / 10
So that's Forza 2. Taken me well over 20 minutes to type all that, so many thanks for reading my review!
