So, getting ready to head off for 3 days exploring and 2 days rally chasing. It looks like the weather will hold up okay, but very cold. Today it snowed down to 400m in Tassie! See you in 6 days time.

I've been checking the SafariTas website regularly, and have downloaded the itinery for Heat 2. Worked out that if we leave half-hour earlier than we plan to, we will be able to check out service before the super-special runs at 10:10. I assume you are staying down South Viv? At least you can afford to sleep in a bit. We have to leave L'ton no later than 6:30. It's not the early morning wake up that gives me the s**ts, but the fact if it is cold, the Midland Hwy will be a pain, as it is reknowned for its fog, it can get really bad.
Hope you lot have bought your winter woolies! Forecast is for the rain to clear the south by early Friday. As the skys will be clear, the mornings will be bloody freezing!

Bad start for Scott Pedder and Glen. A rock sliced straight through the fuel tank as Scott tried to miss the rock. “It was on a fast right corner and I saw the rock and swerved to make sure it didn’t hit the front wheel. I didn’t even feel the impact in the rear and didn’t think anything of it until we started to smell petrol towards the end of the stage,” explained Scott. “We stopped after the finish control and the smell was really strong so we knew something had happened and when Glen (Weston) looked under the rear there was petrol gushing out and we knew the day was over! It’s incredibly irritating because we had a great test earlier in the week and we knew the car was ready to really attack this weekend”It seems like a horror finish for Simon Evans's run in Heat 1. A fantastic tussle with Subaru privateer Dean Herridge saw Evans slowly get the better of him until the last stage when he lost 23 seconds to Herridge to finish 2.2 seconds behind him. The reason is unknown. Neal Bates finished third in the second Corolla followed by Darren Windus in his private Subaru and Will Orders in another Subaru. Michael Guest has finished ninth. Mitsubishi privateer Jack Monkhouse was disapointed when his engine blew on SS2. “To be completely honest if this car caught fire I’d gladly watch it burn to the ground,” stated Jack with a deadly serious tone. “We’ve had so many problems with it since we got it that I wonder if we’re ever going to get it right! It worked perfectly during testing and the shakedown yesterday and gave us no sign that anything was wrong until this happened!”The rally saw the return of Ed Ordynski's co driver Iain Stewart who was navigating for the experienced Stewart Reid in a Corolla. Dean Herridge on his way to Heat 1 victory Evans charging on Michael Guest and Mark Stacey in the Ford Focus with it's new wing Guest with the Focus (is that snow???) Scott Pedder, Michael Guest and Simon Evans Who's this? Rallystuff member Glen feeling the cold Reid and Stewart Locals Simon Jansen and Elysia Kruper Going to see the action tomorrow

Some nice shots there. Ozzie mud/gravel must be different to british gravel because the cars are spotless despite the roads looking so dirty and wet!

I only went today unfortunately (exams this week ) Well got down to see the first pass of the super special which was a hole. Run off the side of the football oval. Appaling infact. Wen to Spectator Point on Fourfoot stage. Was impossible to find due to directions were 2km out. Got somedecent sideway action. Drove 50 odd km to Bowling Stage Spectator point. Due to a absolute idiot of a driver infront of us (doing 80km instead of 110 ) we arrived late and missed the first four cars (evans, bates, pedder and herridge). Got some quality action from the later cars though. And finished up back at Geevston (base) and met Glen and got my hat signed by Dean herridge (sorry about the colours i was wearing Glen ;D). Couldn't find you Viv . I even got them to call your name out on the Super Special Stage (10:10am run). Shame. I didn't explore Bowling much so you could have been there. If you were at FOurfoot I think you would have seen me even if you didn't know who i was . Maybe next year...or even Rally Melbourne

Sounds like it was a good event. From the looks of those pictures it looks just like a Welsh rally .

I'll have to write up a proper report because the rally was a lot of fun, the trip was even better. We went to Panorama and got horribly muddy but a few good photos. I took over 500 photos in 5 days. Also went to Storm Hill and the service park on Saturday. We saw Glen and Scott sitting there looking dejected so we didn't go over and bother them... really bad luck guys. I saw the damaged fuel tank first hand with a big gouge in it... probably lucky not to have a fire. But awesome win on Sunday, congratulations!
I went out to the rental car (Subaru Forester) on Saturday night to find a flat left rear tyre. It was too late to change it without waking people up, so we waited 'til morning... it meant we were late out of Hobart but didn't miss much action.
We sprinted down to Bowling and it was a very good location. Uphill left-hander with a lot of cars struggling for grip. As soon as it finished we bolted north for the point at Fourfoot, but we ended up missing the turn and driving 10km along the wrong road... wide with a generous coating of thick gravel (fun)... we ended up going up two more wrong roads and never found the spectator point. But we did pass Evans, Bates and Pedder on the road... Glen will probably remember us going past them in a white Forester as they gave way to us at a T-intersection. So frustrated, we went back to Bowling then back to Geeveston for the ceremony.
Mitch, I could've told you the Super Special was hopeless, but I didn't have a phone number for you! I was always on the lookout for two guys clad in RalliArt kit but didn't see you. I did manage to have a chat to Glen at the ceremonial start though. Congrats again on the heat win. I was disappointed not to see the Mitsubishi on Saturday but Sunday made up for it.
I'll post some pics when I upload them shortly.

As soon as it finished we bolted north for the point at Fourfoot, but we ended up missing the turn and driving 10km along the wrong road... wide with a generous coating of thick gravel (fun)... we ended up going up two more wrong roads and never found the spectator point. The directions were very misleading. I assume the directions of the internet site were just copied from last year and not checked. In fact, overall I thought the event was very poorly organised, an embarrasment to the rally followers of Tasmania. It was no wonder none of the locals supported it. Viv, if you had kept on going striaght along Lidgerwood Rd (i.e. kept on the main rd, no turnoffs) you may have found the spectator point a further 3 kms up the road. The kilometre readings and directions were almost spot on until Lidgerwood Spur 3. That's the road everyone went down. My navigating skills told me that we should have stayed on the main road and I was right, despite the driver (dad) suggesting I was wrong!

Hmmm shame about the organisation, but wasn't it from Octagon, and they only got the event at the last minute if I recall correctly, or something I made up?

No you're right, Octagon did run the event, but they had a bit of time to organise the event. However, they did not take advice or suggestions from the local rally drivers on how the rally should be run. Instead they completely ignored them and went about it there own way. The super-special (or the stupid-stage as one spectator dubbed it) was merely more than an area of grass and scub cleared to make a track. The surface was rocky and uneven. The spectator information was either copied from last year, or in the case of equipment to take to the stages, just copied from this year's Targa event. The main reason why there were so little local entries, was because that there were 4 rallies, including Safari Tas, spread over 7 weeks. For tight bugeted local teams, it was too much of an ask. In fact, Rally Burnie is on this weekend (similar but much smaller than Targa)

The photos are from the first run around the media stage on Friday morning. That's why the cars are clean. Aussie mud is just as sticky as the UK stuff!

I've uploaded a bunch of my photos from the event. But I had to reduce them to 400px wide for Flickr. I will post some bigger ones when I get the time. In the meantime... here's a slidshow. www.flickr.com/photos/vivski/show/
